Friday, 16 August 1793 David Howell James in the parish of Devynogg on 12 December 1790 (sic: the inquest report has 1792) assaulted Elizabeth John, single woman, with his hands and a stick striking and beating her so that she died (WALES 4/389/3). Hereford Journal W 21 August: "On Friday last at Brecon David Howell James for murder of Elizabeth John at Trecastle in December last was hanged." the delay arose because of an innacuracy in the indictment presented at the Lent sessions, which contained two counts i.e. of killing and of murder. the case was referred to the judges for their opinion.
